# The proof, the machine, and the argument over who solved Navier\-Stokes

### Editorial

For nearly a century, the Navier\-Stokes equations have carried an awkward split\. Engineers use them every day to describe air around a wing, water through a pipe, ocean currents and weather\. Mathematicians have never been able to prove whether a smooth three\-dimensional flow must stay smooth forever or can develop a singularity, a point where the equations break toward infinity\. The Clay Mathematics Institute made that uncertainty one of its seven Millennium Prize Problems, with $1 million attached to a valid solution\.

OpenAI said this week that an internal system found a construction showing that a smooth solution can develop a finite\-time singularity\. The reported scale was extraordinary: roughly 10,000 agents exchanging 2\.7 million messages, producing about 130 billion output tokens over 88 hours\. GPT\-6 Astra then spent another 17 hours formalizing the proof in Lean\. If the result survives expert review, it will rank among the clearest demonstrations yet that large groups of AI agents can do more than accelerate familiar knowledge work\. They may be able to search mathematical territory that no person or small team could cover at comparable speed\.

The celebration stalled almost immediately\. The night before OpenAI’s announcement, NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster said that he and Levent Alpöge had solved three closely related Navier\-Stokes problems\. Understanding AI reported that OpenAI’s system had worked with drafts and ideas emerging from that human research community\. Mathematicians objected to the timing, the handling of credit and the spectacle of a corporate announcement arriving before the normal process of circulation, scrutiny and attribution had run its course\. Even OpenAI backed away from a clean victory lap\.

That dispute matters because mathematics is unusually dependent on a shared chain of partial advances\. A proof may have one final set of authors, but the path is built from definitions, failed approaches, seminar conversations, preprints and the decision by other researchers to make unfinished work visible\. An agent swarm can absorb and recombine that accumulated record at a scale no human can match\. The faster it moves, the easier it becomes to compress years of communal work into one dramatic output and one corporate name\.

There is also a serious counterargument\. A machine that can test thousands of approaches against formal constraints may reveal connections that would otherwise remain hidden\. Lean verification can expose gaps that prestige and intuition miss\. The cost reported here was enormous, yet the experiment offers a real method for attacking problems where search, synthesis and checking are the bottlenecks\. It also changes who can participate\. Researchers with a strong question and limited institutional support may eventually gain access to a computational team that once belonged only to the wealthiest laboratories\. Refusing that method because the surrounding norms are unsettled would protect an old process while leaving a powerful new instrument unused\.

The harder task is to build norms that can survive the instrument\. Claims of a solved Millennium Problem need independent mathematical review\. Training inputs and intermediate sources need enough provenance to show which ideas came from where\. Formal verification should strengthen expert judgment rather than substitute for it\. Prize committees, journals and research institutions will need rules for work produced by systems whose contribution is distributed across models, operators, compute providers and the human literature they consumed\.

This week offered a glimpse of scientific abundance arriving before its social contract\. Ten thousand agents may have helped crack a problem that resisted generations of mathematicians\. The same run also showed how quickly discovery can become an argument about ownership when the machinery outruns the customs that gave the field trust\. The proof now has to earn acceptance line by line\. The institutions around it have a larger proof of their own to complete: that faster discovery can still preserve credit, openness and confidence in the result\.

Baizhang’s day without work

Baizhang Huaihai was an old Chan teacher who continued to work in the monastery fields\. His students worried about his age\. They asked him to rest, but he kept joining the daily labor, carrying his tools into the garden with everyone else\.

One day the monks hid his tools\. Baizhang could no longer take his place in the work\. When the meal came, he refused to eat\. The next day passed the same way\. His students finally returned what they had taken, and he went back to the fields\. The saying attached to the story is plain: a day without work is a day without food\.

The line can sound severe if it is treated as a rule about earning one’s keep\. The scene is gentler and stranger\. The students tried to care for their teacher by separating him from the activity that joined him to the community\. Baizhang answered with his whole routine\. Work, food and belonging formed one movement, and he would not keep only the comfortable part\.

Useful work does more than produce an output\. It gives shape to attention and places a person among other people\. When a tool suddenly does in hours what once took years, the old forms of effort may change\. The need to participate, contribute and receive the day’s life together remains\.

Practice for the week

Choose one ordinary task this week and do it with full attention, without trying to optimize or display it\.

— Glenbrook Payments News \| 2026\-09\-10

Mastercard introduced Wallet Pay, a portfolio meant to let digital wallets work across contactless payments, QR codes and online checkout\. The company says wallets already serve more than 4\.3 billion users worldwide and could top 6 billion by 2030\.

The strategic prize is interoperability\. Wallets have grown into broad service platforms, but acceptance still varies by market and payment method\. Mastercard is positioning its network as common infrastructure for wallet operators that want wider reach without building every connection themselves\.

— Linas’s Newsletter \| 2026\-09\-10

Chime agreed to acquire Stride Bank for $590 million, giving the consumer fintech direct ownership of a chartered institution that has helped power programs across the sector\. Chime said it does not plan to turn Stride into a growth engine for unrelated banking activity\.

The deal reduces Chime’s dependence on sponsor\-bank relationships and gives it tighter control of compliance, deposits and product development\. Regulators will still examine whether the combination preserves the controls expected of a bank as a large fintech moves closer to the center of the regulated system\.

— Morning Brew \| 2026\-09\-05

The United States added more jobs than expected in August, providing a firmer reading on labor demand as the summer ended\. The result sits alongside signs that workers are becoming less willing to switch employers\.

A resilient jobs market supports income and consumer spending\. It can also keep wage and service\-price pressure alive, leaving monetary policy sensitive to whether hiring strength continues through the fall\.

— Linas’s Newsletter \| 2026\-09\-07

Revolut secured a US bank charter after a long effort to enter the market on its own regulatory footing\. The approval reportedly locks the company into four initial products, narrowing the scope of what it can offer while supervisors assess execution\.

A charter can improve economics and speed product launches by reducing reliance on partner banks\. It also makes Revolut directly responsible for the capital, compliance and governance burdens that partnerships had previously shared\.

EY’s chief economist argued that AI\-driven productivity is producing a winner\-takes\-all pattern in which gains protect corporate margins more readily than household income\. The assessment adds distribution to the debate over whether AI raises aggregate output\.

Productivity can make the economy richer while leaving workers with little bargaining power over the gains\. The policy and business question is whether new tools expand opportunity across firms and occupations or reinforce the advantage of companies that already control capital, data and compute\.

— This Week in AI \| 2026\-09\-10

OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki published a manifesto arguing that no laboratory has solved alignment, only days after the company released GPT\-6 Astra\. The warning came from inside the organization advancing one of the most capable systems\.

The tension is substantive even if critics see regulatory positioning in it\. Stronger agents can complete longer tasks with less supervision, which increases the value of capability and the cost of behavior that operators cannot reliably inspect or stop\.
