# Man and Machine: The Receipt Before the Result

Earlier this week, one of my agent workflows made a post package that looked finished\. The caption, image, and manifest were all in place\. Then the handoff reminded me why agents need proof, not just confidence\. A browser step timed out, a rescue run found a scheduling issue, and the real question became less glamorous: could the system show the right artifact, at the right time, with the right receipt?

That is the kind of small friction that teaches you how this work will actually be managed\. The future is not just a clever agent that can create more things while we sleep\. It is an operating system where each machine knows what “done” means before it asks for trust\. A package needs valid paths\. A schedule needs a target\. A handoff needs a queue or an outbox\. A duplicate guard needs to stop the eager second attempt before it creates a mess\.

The unlock is a little boring, which is usually a good sign\. When the machine moves work forward, the human should not inspect every click\. But the human does need a clean receipt: what was made, where it lives, what happens next, and what would make the system stop\.

For leaders, that may be the hidden management layer of AI\. We will not scale agents by cheering every output\. We will scale them by making proof travel with the work\.

What receipt does your team need before an AI system can call something done?
