Man and Machine: Setting the Stage

Man and Machine: Setting the Stage

I have been sketching a different kind of smart home, one that thinks less about devices and more about the moments happening around them.

Saturday afternoon by the pool should not feel like the morning routine. Dinner with friends deserves warmer light and quieter music. The path home after a long day should feel welcoming, while bedtime should let the house settle down with you. Even the deer eating the shrubs might get a brief flash of light, though I would prefer not to turn the garden into a nightclub.

Oscar helped me turn those ordinary scenes into a simple idea for a personal agent: use time, weather, who is home, and what is on the calendar to suggest the right setting, then keep the controls quiet and let people override everything. It is still a design idea, not a finished system, and that distinction matters.

The machine can remember the patterns and coordinate the details. It cannot decide what hospitality feels like, when music has become noise, or whether a room needs more warmth rather than more automation. That judgement stays with us.

The home should not perform its technology. It should help set the stage for the life already happening inside it, then get out of the way.
