Man and Machine: The App Said Online

The app said “Online.” The motor drive’s display was dark. Neither told us why my pool’s swim jet had been starting unexpectedly overnight.

The swim jet creates a current you can swim against. After the overnight starts, I shut off its breaker.

In September, I asked Oscar, my personal AI agent, to help investigate. We worked through photographs, equipment manuals and the control app. I was at the pool, checking the equipment and reporting what happened. Oscar helped piece together how the controls worked and what to check next.

With power restored for an attended test, I pressed the poolside button. The motor started, the water moved, and a second press stopped it. The local controls worked during that test. The overnight starts remained unexplained.

After I switched off the equipment’s exterior selector and the drive’s display went dark, the app still said “Online.” That status alone couldn’t tell us what was happening at the drive, much less what had started the motor overnight.

No active pump timer or current shared users appeared in the screens available to us. We also couldn’t find a history showing what had commanded the motor to start.

Oscar could read the manuals and help narrow the investigation. It couldn’t recover an event the app didn’t show us. And a normal attended test couldn’t explain what had happened overnight.

We had a more precise problem to take to the manufacturer or a technician: find the command history, inspect the control inputs, and establish what had actually started the motor.

I turned the breaker off again.

There’s a point in this kind of work when another plausible explanation adds very little. You need a record, a measurement or someone qualified to inspect the equipment. Oscar helped us work out what evidence was missing. It couldn’t supply that evidence itself.
