Man and Machine: The Human in the Loop

Man and Machine: The Human in the Loop

I asked an AI to make the human in an image look a little more like me.

It did exactly what AI often does when the instruction is technically clear but strategically incomplete: it overcorrected.

The first version became too much of a portrait. Too literal. Too LinkedIn-founder-avatar. It solved the words and missed the system.

The better version came when I stopped asking for likeness and went back to the pattern: the Man as an operator, seated at the workbench, notebook open, facing the Machine. Then I only nudged the hair a little greyer.

That is the work now.

Not just prompting harder. Operating better.

The machine can generate. It can vary. It can execute. But the human still has to hold the taste, the intent, the boundaries, and the memory of what the thing is supposed to be.

In business, I think this will matter more than most leaders realise.

The advantage will not go to the teams that simply use AI the most. It will go to the teams that know when the machine is being helpful, when it is being obedient, and when it has quietly wandered off-brand.

The human in the loop is not there to slow the system down.

The human is there to keep the system honest.

Where in your workflow does the machine need more instruction, and where does it need better taste?
